Another fantastic weekend adventure together with Bill! He made his way in from the East Coast and we had a fun drive up to Madison for the weekend. Friday we enjoyed some lunch under the bright blue skies, explored the Picnic Point walk, and the UW/Community Garden space which was fantastic! I've never seen community gardens so big! We checked in at the house where we were staying and then spent some time at the Union on the lake and ate downtown. The energy in downtown Madison is uniquely Madison. It's highly positive without being overbearing like most big cities. People are clearly unwinding but in a way that is metered and not out of control. It's one of the few times I felt comfortable being surrounded by so many other people.
Saturday morning started with a visit to the Farmer's Market on the Capitol! Neither the weather not the vendors disappointed and with making brunch being our goal we had a few things to buy which is always fun! Stella's Cheese Bread would be our base for Avocado toast, flowers for the table, and fresh veggies to go along with things... oh and strawberries for a small salad. We enjoyed the people watching immensely!
After a successful brunch it was off to Wonewoc for the Barn Dance which was a first for me! It was gorgeous there! Bill took me on a tour of the grounds and we were directed to the strawberries in the garden by the owner. We'd just had some for brunch that we'd bought at the Farmer's Market but these were still on the vine! Bill and I enjoyed picking berries and just generally being outside with everyone before playing some badminton and heading inside to start dancing!
We danced all night in this barn that now has a dance floor and lights strung. Everyone brought food and drinks and sweet treats. It was such a wonderful time, good music and lots of laughter. For Bill it was something that meant a lot to him because dancing connects him with a piece of himself that he really enjoys and with a community of people he'd really connected with; for myself it reminded me of first meeting Bill and how much that entire experience had changed my life for the better, how much adventure Bill had brought to my life and how wonderfully everyone had welcomed me in! In all, a truly successful and meaningful evening... to top it off... on the way out Bill and I looked up to see a dark and very starry sky (something special for me).
For two men who spend most of the time traveling and going to and fro, I think we do well connecting within and finding home with a variety of people and places. Even being able to make strong memories in something as simple as an experience, we hold tight to the intangibles (sights, sounds, smells)... perhaps it's why music is so meaningful for us both. While Madison isn't home right now for Bill, it's got some "home" feeling for me. So does Chicago, so does Hartford now, ... and they likely always will... I'm my truest self in all of those places because pieces of home are there. Life and finding the Joy within each experience it brings is so wonderful! Oh how lucky we are!
